Lack of sleep increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease

Some recent studies show that people with sleep disorders at a young age are more likely to have Alzheimer's disease later in life is higher than normal.

Recent research shows that chronic insomnia is one of the main factors causing Alzheimer's disease. This has attracted the attention of numerous people, especially those suffering from insomnia.

The researchers recorded the rise and decline of beta amyloid, a protein related to Alzheimer's disease, in the brains of mice.

By preventing these mice slept, they discovered the amount of beta amyloid in their brains increased by 25% compared to normal. Beta amyloid is a protein, we can create protein arrays which are harmful to the brain of Alzheimer's patients.

Insomnia increases the amount of beta amyloid in the brain. This protein is one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease.

The team said that the amount of amyloid beta increased when animals awake and decreased when they go to bed. This result will be announced tomorrow on the Science Times.
Earlier, this newspaper has also published a similar study on humans. Results of experiments on volunteers showed increased levels of amyloid beta in the brain when they are awake and decreased when they slept; like as mice.

Professor David Holtzman of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, USA, said: "These findings suggest that we need to prioritize treating insomnia, not only because of the immediate harm its for the patient, but also because of the potential risks affecting the brain later ".

Scientists have also found links between Alzheimer's disease and Orexin Neurons, another protein affect sleep. Orexin Neurons in the brain when injected mice, animals sleep less than usual, and thus the amount of beta amyloid in the brain, we also increased. And after three consecutive weeks of insomnia causes amyloid plaques in the brain first appeared.

To prevent this, they used a drug capable of blocking the effect of Orexin Neurons and help sleep. Treatment results showed that after three months given the drug, the amount of beta amyloid in the brain were reduced by 80%.

"The treatment will soon be tested on humans and can become the most effective method to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease" - Professor Holtzman said.

He also pointed out that at present the risk of Alzheimer's disease is increasing and began to appear in younger people due to routine activities the night and no moderation.

Other studies also agree with the views and lack of sleep staying up late the child will increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease as they age.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia diseases, the current estimated 700,000 Britons have the disease. Experts predict this figure could double in the next few decades.

CEO Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "This is just the first study that insomnia is the cause of Alzheimer's disease and moreover it is only stopped in the experiments on mice. Therefore, those who are suffering from insomnia should not be too concerned about these findings.

Currently in the world there are 35 million people with dementia, I think we need to focus on research to find the cause of this disease to have treatments most effective. "

Professor Clive Ballard, director of Community Organizations Alzheimer's patients in England, said: "It's nice to have the ability to cause Alzheimer's disease stems from insomnia. However, there are many other biological factors affect the amount of beta amyloid in the brain increased. Therefore, we still need more research to clarify this. "
